Artificial intelligence in the construction industry

It is possible to use artificial intelligence throughout the building's life cycle: from the planning phase to construction, building maintenance, as well as to support customers and end users, and at the end of the building's life cycle by utilizing building components in a circular economy. Artificial intelligence is especially useful in routine tasks, leaving time for productive work and managing people.

Artificial intelligence in a nutshell

Different forms of artificial intelligence include different image and video recognition, speech understanding, generative artificial intelligence, i.e. the production of new content, as well as data analysis and automated decision-making that supports companies' business operations.

Utilization of artificial intelligence in different stages of the construction project's life cycle

Project development and planning

Artificial intelligence-based design systems analyze data from different sources and produce optimal solutions for the placement, massing, life cycle costs, emissions and other effects of various buildings, as well as structural solutions. They identify potential risks and errors before starting construction.

Construction

Applications based on artificial intelligence help in work planning, optimize the use of labor and materials. The applications monitor the operation of construction sites in real time and detect deviations, such as safety risks or inefficiency. Artificial intelligence can help project management with routine tasks such as writing memos and decision-making by analyzing large amounts of data and providing predictions and recommendations. This covers, among other things, cost, quality, risk and resource management, as well as scheduling.

Building maintenance

In building maintenance, artificial intelligence predicts the occurrence of faults in equipment and structures by analyzing historical data and identifying deviations from normal operation. It enables preventive maintenance and fixing defects before bigger problems. Artificial intelligence is already being used for predictive maintenance, e.g. in elevators and IV machines.

Customer service

In customer service, artificial intelligence can be seen in chatbots that combine various artificial intelligence applications such as understanding and producing text and business data.

Building reuse and circular economy

Artificial intelligence applications can help with building reuse, circular economy and demolition planning. They can optimize the best possible end result in terms of the whole and ensure resource-efficient construction.

Keep these three things in mind before implementing AI

Please note that these three things are on your list when you start planning the implementation of artificial intelligence in your company.

Standardization of processes

Work steps or doing can be automated, only if the processes, i.e. doing, are standardized in the company precisely enough. This is also a prerequisite for starting to map standardized data from the work phase.

Information harmonization and standardization of information structures

When the information is harmonized and the information structures standardized, it is possible to accumulate data, i.e. teaching material for artificial intelligence. The information must also be maintained and enriched regularly and corrected if necessary.

Staff training

In order for personnel to be able and dare to make full use of the information produced by artificial intelligence applications, purposeful training and management commitment are needed.
