Sustainability

The construction industry has a significant impact on the well-being of people, the environment and the economy. The Construction Industry Responsibility Program forms the framework for the industry's responsibility work. The goal is to be a trendsetter in development and to reduce the harm caused by operations and increase the positive impacts.

As a large industry, we have a great responsibility. Taking responsibility and turning it into a competitive advantage for the industry is one of the priorities of the Construction Industry Federation (RT)'s strategy.

Over the past couple of decades, we have promoted sustainable construction, fair working practices and healthy competition. We have developed comprehensive roadmaps for low-carbon and biodiversity. We will continue our long-term work on these themes and will also pay more attention to the diversity and well-being of the people working in the sector.

Big industry – big responsibility

The real estate and construction sector directly or indirectly employs one in five of Finland's employed people. The tax revenue is also significant: 40–45 percent of the euros invested in construction end up in taxes and tax-like payments. Construction accounts for 60 percent of investments, half of the use of raw materials, and about a third of energy consumption and emissions, including the built environment.

Strategic responsibility themes are:

Climate change: A low-carbon and climate-resilient built environment
Biodiversity: Construction that takes nature into account
Circular economy: Life cycle-oriented operation
Workforce: Diverse and well-being personnel
Business principles: Transparent and fair value chain
