Information about the infrastructure sector and about us

A quarter of the volume of construction in Finland is the construction or maintenance of infrastructure such as highways and municipal engineering. Construction Industry In RT, the infrastructure industry is the second largest industry. It offers solutions and services that have a great social impact.

A man walks down the street

Of the industries represented by RT, the largest is the building industry (half of the combined turnover of the member companies), the second largest is the infrastructure industry (a quarter of the turnover) and the third largest is the construction product industry (an eighth of the turnover).

Infra industry companies are represented in RT by INFRA ry.

The total value of infrastructure construction in Finland is approximately 10 billion euros per year, of which INFRA members produce an estimated two-thirds. The money spent on infrastructure produces solutions and services that have a great impact on people's well-being, the environment and the economy.

For Finland, for example, it is vitally important that key bus connections and routes critical to reliability of service work in all conditions. A good transport infrastructure ensures smooth movement of people to work, services and hobbies and improves the logistical competitiveness of the export industry. Infrastructure also includes green areas and water supply, energy and data transmission networks. Functional infrastructure ensures a comprehensively safe and comfortable life.

Economic and employment effects of infrastructure construction

INFRA's task is to increase general understanding of the important social role of infrastructure construction and to support decision-makers in decision-making related to the infrastructure sector.

Construction maintains and increases the production potential of the economy. The special feature of infrastructure construction is its long-lasting effects on the mobility of labor and goods. In this way, it creates the conditions for sustainable growth that finances well-being.

The domestic level of infrastructure construction is excellent. A billion euros invested in infrastructure will create at least 11 jobs. Jobs are available in companies of all sizes across Finland. Of the money used to build and repair infrastructure, 000 percent returns to society in taxes and fees.

This is how infrastructure development affects
By developing the infrastructure, the basis for future sustainable growth is created: good locations for business and employment, as well as conditions for accessibility and emission reductions. A smartly chosen public transport project in a growth center multiplies other construction and thus accumulated tax revenues.

The environmental effects of infrastructure construction are large

Infrastructure construction produces emissions and consumes natural resources. On the other hand, with their solutions, the companies in the field are also able to make our society less emitting and help adapt to climate change.

For example, wind power or clean transport infrastructure cannot be created without an infrastructure developer. Infrastructure construction also creates solutions to the challenges caused by climate change and promotes the circular economy in a significant way, as long as zoning, permit practices, regulation or attitudes do not set unnecessary obstacles.

In order to show its part in the direction towards a nature-positive transition in the construction industry, INFRA has been strongly involved in, for example, national biodiversity work. We have also actively contributed to the reduction of emissions on construction sites, for example by means of emission calculation.

The industry reduces negative environmental impacts
The construction industry's biodiversity road map shows plenty of ways to stop nature loss and promote biodiversity in the built environment. The low-carbon road map, on the other hand, shows the direction for the effective reduction of emissions in the built environment.

Cooperation and procurement expertise are emphasized

INFRA makes an active and long-term contribution to the development of infrastructure projects and procurements and to ensure healthy competition in the field. For example, in cooperation with the Finnish Railways Agency, the Municipal Association, SKOL and Koneyrittäjie, we have defined what are good cooperation practices in infrastructure construction.

In infrastructure projects, it is important for the client, developer consultant and contractor to commit together to promote clear and interactive management, cooperation and trust, as well as documents and contract requirements that support the joint success of the project parties. The parties must together promote competence and quality, smooth and timely decision-making and sticking to decisions.

The basis of high-quality cooperation between the project parties and successful infrastructure projects is built in market dialogues and procurement expertise. The importance of procurement expertise is emphasized in infrastructure construction, of which slightly more than half is done for public clients, municipalities and the state.
