The situation in the construction industry is indeed challenging. The volume of new construction has plummeted to a historic low, interest rates have tightened investments, and uncertainty has spread throughout the entire supply chain. Despite the difficult years, it is good to remember that a recession is not permanent: after a decline, there is always an increase. And that is when operators in the HVAC and building services industry need to be ready.

The current year has required flexibility, perseverance and courage from building services operators. There has also been some good news from the sector in the form of a stable order book and project starts. On the other hand, national differences continue to grow, and the bleak market situation continues, especially in eastern Finland. According to the Construction Industry Association's estimate, stronger growth in the construction sector is expected no earlier than 2027. The situation in renovation construction threatens to deteriorate further without government support measures.
The economic downturn has reduced the number of projects and thus increased competition in the sector. However, the rise of the building services sector is inevitable: at the same time, the role, business opportunities and operating environment of HVAC contractors are changing. The green transition, energy-efficient renovations, growing demand for heating and cooling solutions, automation and the need to renew the building stock are strengthening the sector's importance and creating a foundation for sustainable business. On the other hand, regulations, energy efficiency requirements and technological developments are increasing the skills requirements.
Many companies have been forced to adjust their workforce. As construction picks up, there will be a major shortage of skilled workers. As project starts pick up, HVAC contractors are expected to have a sufficient supply of skilled personnel. Companies that manage to retain and attract skilled workers are well positioned for the upturn. If new workers are not recruited into the sector, the growth of companies may even slow down.
HVAC Technical Contractors LVI-TU wants to ensure that its members have a sufficient number of skilled workers. In order to ensure future growth, the industry needs young people and those changing their fields to grow into professionals and take the industry to the next level. The association launched this autumn The HVAC-GOAT project, which aims to arouse interest specifically in the HVAC contracting industry.
Although the market is currently tight, the future looks bright. LVI-TU is working on many fronts to achieve this. The union's advocacy work focuses on a functioning labor market, a skilled workforce, and the energy efficiency and sustainable development of building services systems. In addition, we carry out extensive advocacy work in the industry together with the Finnish Construction Industry Federation (RT) and the Finnish Building Services Association.
Thank you to all our members and partners for the past year.
Have a peaceful Christmas and a successful New Year!
