Concrete Structure of the Year competition finalists announced

The finalists for the 2025 Concrete Structure Competition have been announced. A total of 10 high-quality proposals were submitted to the competition. The competition jury selected four of these projects as finalists for the 2025 Concrete Structure Award.

Finalists of the Concrete Structure of the Year 2025 competition

The finalists are:

  • EriCa Green Chemistry Park, Espoo
  • Kottby grundskola – Käpylä Swedish-language comprehensive school, Helsinki
  • Kruunuvuoren Bridge, Helsinki
  • Vuosaari Bioheating Plant, Helsinki

EriCa Green Chemistry Park, Espoo

The modern research and office building is designed with an emphasis on safety, clarity, functionality and sustainability. The flexible spaces of the clear-cut building support research and collaboration in the field. The sandwich element surfaces of the building's facades utilize the new Muotobetoni® manufacturing technology developed in Finland and give the concrete facade a recognizable texture and a strong horizontal rhythm.

Kottby grundskola – Käpylä Swedish-language comprehensive school, Helsinki

The facades' relief-like reddish through-dyed concrete and plaster surfaces also match the architecture of the surrounding buildings. The rather large building complex is attractively located on a park-like slope. The building has a modular, element-structured concrete frame, slender white concrete pillars support the glass walls of the high dining room, and concrete stands out spectacularly in the building's stairwells.

Kruunuvuoren Bridge, Helsinki

The horizontal-arched Kruunuvuorensilta is a 1191-meter-long concrete-deck composite cable-stayed bridge. According to the jury, the project has developed and applied advanced concrete technology, utilizing special concretes and real-time temperature and strength monitoring. The bridge is a striking new maritime landmark in the urban environment of Helsinki.

Vuosaari Bioheating Plant, Helsinki

The jury highlighted the fact that the Vuosaari Bioheating Plant demonstrates that an industrial building can be both technically advanced and architecturally ambitious. In particular, in the fuel system buildings, cast-in-place concrete structures and excellently successful clean-cast surfaces play a significant role in the overall design.
