Last year's occupational safety competition between building construction sites for the safest construction site in the Southwestern Finland region has been decided - the Hartela Länsi-Suomi and Rakennuspalvelu J. Martti & Co. construction sites in Turku were awarded the safest awards.
The national construction category was won by Hartela Länsi-Suomi Oy's Astra construction site. Responsible foreman Lari Sinilaakso emphasizes the commitment of the personnel: "We have indeed achieved good results, and the most important thing is the committed construction site personnel. The employees have followed the agreed rules and the management has worked very hard to keep the sites in order and the workers in good conditions. Regular correction of TR measurement deficiencies has played an important role, they have helped to keep the demanding renovation site clean and safe. An open atmosphere, where people dare to discuss not only successes but also damages that have occurred, also plays an important role. The most important thing is that everyone works together."
The first place in the locally built series was taken by Rakennuspalvelu J. Martti & Co Oy's construction site As Oy Lattoluoto. Responsible foreman Eija Lehtonen emphasizes everyday occupational safety aspects:
“The excellent result achieved by the construction site did not require miracles – it is enough to walk around the site regularly, address any deviations immediately and make every employee contribute. Maintaining cleanliness is important. A clean construction site is a much safer and more comfortable working environment, and when every employee maintains cleanliness, the construction site stays clean.”
Lehtonen shares Sinilaakso's view on commitment: "Such results cannot be achieved alone, it requires everyone's commitment and teamwork."
CEO of Construction Service J. Martti & Co Oy Riku Peltonen highlights the importance of long-term work: “We take care of occupational safety together. This victory belongs to the entire construction site staff, as each employee plays an important role in building a common occupational safety culture. As a company, we have invested in developing the cleanliness and safety of our construction sites in recent years, and it is therefore particularly rewarding to see that commitment and long-term work are also reflected in the results. We measure cleanliness and occupational safety weekly at each of our construction sites, and we have also linked it to the remuneration of all personnel.”
The top places in both categories were decided by very small differences. The results of the competition show that planning, open interaction and everyday occupational safety work are effective ways to improve the well-being of the entire work community. A safe construction site is not a coincidence – it is done together, every day.

Background of occupational safety competitions
A regional competition has been organized in Southwest Finland since 1991. The aim of the competition is to find and highlight an exemplary safe building construction site. A construction site where everyone takes care of not only their own safety, but also that of their co-workers and everyone else. A construction site where the company's safety management is evident in all operations on the site.
In the competition, safety on construction sites is assessed using the TR meter, a method of observing and assessing occupational safety commonly used on building construction sites.
