Safety lessons from the sea

Safety is promoted at RT together with member companies and stakeholders, but sometimes it's worth taking a look outside your own property. RT's security team turned its attention to the ulapa and visited Meriturva in Lohja in the summer. The same things apply to safety at sea and on a construction site.

In addition to professional seafarers, Meriturva's customers include all authorities operating at sea and flight crew. Safety courses are also organized for boaters and ship passengers. There is also training for wind turbine builders and staff.

During the visit, the members of RT's security team could not only admire the beautiful setting of the training, but also note that the fields have a lot in common in security.

Sea captain Marko Aalto, head of the rescue training unit, presenting the training hall to members of RT's safety team. Its large size has enabled the acquisition of the latest rescue equipment and the installation of equipment and evacuation systems specific to the shipping company. The training pool is 43 meters long and 27 meters wide.

"Training here means, in addition to sharing information, practicing things in practice. The training has clear requirements and there are no compromises. In shipping, you can encounter really demanding situations at work, in which case you also need to have clear tips for coping with the situations", described the mood of the chairman of RT's safety team Antti Leino on a visiting tour.

According to Leino, many things seen in Meriturva also apply to construction sites.

"For example, working at heights. Does the foreman know how to choose the right fall limiting or stopping system, and does the employee know how to attach, put on and maintain the reels and harnesses. Training is available, so we ensure the right skills on land and at sea".

A security team member who was involved Jussi Puustinen was also satisfied with the tour.

"The trainers at the Meriturva training center illustrated well what is practically required for teaching, learning and acquiring critical skills", he stated.

The training hall is the only one in Finland where you can learn how to escape from a helicopter that has gone under water and made a forced landing in HUET training (Helicopter Under Water Escape Training).

Meriturva's training hall is an internationally unique facility designed for rescue training, with top-level equipment. One side of the hall is built as the side of the ship and equipped with authentic rescue equipment. Exercises are carried out in changeable weather conditions, the wind can blow in the pool at the push of a button, the metric markings can flow, it can rain and it can be dark.

The hall also features, among other things, a unique rescue helicopter simulator. With the help of a winching helicopter on the roof, people are practiced rescuing people from water, life rafts and the ship's deck.

Marine safety has a lot of safety equipment familiar to builders.

Meriturva is a state educational institution whose goal is to improve the safety of seafarers and other people moving on water. It trains students and professional seafarers in accordance with the requirements of the STCW standard (Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) of the international maritime organization IMO.
