The energy subsidy changed – the usual energy efficiency projects related to building technology are excluded from the scope of the subsidy

The Ministry of Labor and the Economy has outlined the priorities of energy support for this year. It's a shame that subsidies that encourage energy efficiency improvements have been cut with such a large hand. It can be seen from the decisions that difficult decisions have had to be made regarding the direction of subsidies. Actions have had to be left out of them, which, however, have a significant impact on energy consumption and the achievement of strict energy saving goals.

According to the policy of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, the energy subsidy promotes e.g. production of renewable energy, energy saving or enhancing the production or use of energy, utilizing waste heat or otherwise changing the energy system to a low-carbon one. In the future, support will not be granted for energy efficiency projects related to the buildings' usual building technology. With regard to renewable energy projects, support is only granted to new technology projects.

"Currently, the need to repair residential buildings is more than nine billion euros annually, and the need will increase if no action is taken. A prerequisite for achieving the national climate goals is the purposeful renovation of the existing building stock to make it energy efficient. Therefore, energy efficiency projects aimed at conventional building technology are important, even if there is no further support for them in the future", special expert of LVI-Tekniset Urakoitsijat LVI-TU ry Juha-Ville Mäkinen toteaa.

For property owners, improving the functioning of building technical systems and partially renewing them are profitable investments in terms of both energy efficiency and preservation of property value.

"Replacing old technology with the latest solutions is not always the most cost-effective or sensible solution, even if it sounds great. Often, the energy efficiency of building technical systems can be improved with quite easy and inexpensive measures. By looking at usage times, setting values and network adjustments, you can often achieve significant savings. Even by renewing individual devices, the efficiency of the entire system can often be improved," reminds Mäkinen.
