December is full of various delicacies. Especially when preparing the kunku (ham or turkey) for the Christmas table, it is good to remember that frying fat does not belong in the drain. When it hardens, it gets stuck in the drain and in the worst case it blocks the pipeline.

Fat accumulated in the ham or turkey roasting bag must not be poured down the drain. Although frying fat is runny when warm, when it cools it hardens and gets stuck in the drain pipe. Pouring warm water down the drain as a friend of the frying fat does not help, because the water accelerates the hardening of the fat and thus the clogging of the drain.
Special expert of LVI-Tekniset Urakoitsijat LVI-TU ry Juha-Ville Mäkinen gives tips for disposing of frying fat:
- Prepare a tasty sauce for the festive table from the frying fat.
- Put the frying fat in, for example, an empty milk can and take it to the mixed waste container.
- Recycle the frying fat into renewable fuel through the Ham trick.
If, in spite of everything, the frying fat gets into the drain and blocks it, call an HVAC professional for help.
"Especially in the kitchen sewer lines of apartment buildings, the inner surface of the pipe can be blocked even from a long distance. The drain should be opened and cleaned along its entire length by a professional. Even the Christmas holidays go by in a considerably calmer atmosphere," states Mäkinen.
