Fatty taste, but not drain clog

December is known to be the month of delicacies. When preparing all kinds of delicacies, it is worth remembering that frying fats must not be poured down the drain. It is a long-term guest in the pipeline and can block the drain.

Although it would be easy to pour the fat accumulated in the roasting bag of ham or turkey into the kitchen sink, it must not be done. A drain is not a garbage can. Frying fat is runny when warm, but when it cools it hardens and clogs the drain pipe. Pouring water down the drain as a friend of the frying fat does not help, as it accelerates the hardening of the fat and accelerates the clogging of the drain.

Special expert of LVI-Tekniset Urakoitsijat LVI-TU ry Juha-Ville Mäkinen tips for disposing of frying fat:

  • Make a delicious sauce for the Christmas table.
  • Cool the frying fat in, for example, an empty milk can, and transfer the cooled fat to a bio-waste container.
  • Recycle into renewable fuel through the Ham trick.

However, if the frying fat accidentally spills into the drain and blocks it, call an HVAC professional for help.

"Especially in the kitchen sewer lines of apartment buildings, the inner surface of the pipe can be blocked even from a long distance. It is important that the drain is opened and cleaned along its entire length in a professional and safe manner. This is how the Christmas season goes in the most relaxed atmosphere, says Mäkinen.
