In the construction industry, the change in the operating environment increases the need to update skills

Low-carbon construction and circular economy solutions are examples of things that require builders to have new skills and further training. The Construction Industry Training Center RATEKO anticipates changing information needs and is next launching projects to support professionals in the field in implementing the EU taxonomy and the future low-carbon requirements of the Construction Act.

Construction industry RT's own professional educational institution RATEKO has developed together with RT's member companies and other experts in the field in recent years several new training contents for the needs of professionals in the field. A project to implement the taxonomy, i.e. the sustainable finance classification system, is now starting.

Taxonomy is part of the EU's Green Development program, which aims to support the EU's climate and energy goals by directing funding to environmentally sustainable activities. The first taxonomy-related reporting obligations started from the beginning of 2022. In the coming years, EU legislation on taxonomy will expand and become more detailed. As a result, the taxonomy compliance reporting obligation will also directly cover smaller companies.

The construction industry RT has participated in the development of EU taxonomy legislation through the membership of the cooperation body established by FIEC, the European umbrella organization of construction companies, and the EU Commission. In RATEKO's project, RT's and other experts' know-how gathered from the taxonomy is channeled to the use of the Finnish construction industry in a wide area. It improves companies' capabilities to comply with taxonomy legislation in a uniform and efficient manner.

Another current project is related to low-carbon construction and the future Construction Act, which is expected to enter into force at the beginning of 2024. For operators in the real estate and construction industry, this means a new type of construction regulation, which aims, among other things, to reduce emissions and environmental impacts of the built environment. RATEKO is putting together a learning and training package that brings together RT's and various partners' knowledge and guidance on low-carbon construction and the application of the future law.

The only private educational institution in the construction industry that has been operating for six decades

"There is a growing need for versatile development of the skills of those entering the construction industry and those working in the industry, as the operating environment is changing at an accelerating pace. Continuous dialogue with representatives of working life keeps us up-to-date on the skills needs of the construction industry," says the principal Heidi Hussar About RATEKO, the 60th anniversary of which has passed this year.

RATEKO organizes degrees, refresher and refresher training for professionals in the construction industry, develops industry training and produces learning materials and electronic teaching content. RATEKO also has a newly certified management system and ISO 9001 certificate.

Today, part of acquiring and updating professional skills takes place online. RATEKO produces e-learning solutions for, among other things, improving occupational safety and moisture management skills at construction sites. Recently, the Construction and circular economy RAKI training focused on the circular economy has been implemented. The trainings also take into account the multilingual workforce of the construction industry, and they are available in several different languages.

"The year RATEKO was founded in 1962 was a time of accelerating construction. Construction became industrialized and the need for more versatile development of the skills of those working in the field grew. Needs-oriented education that anticipates changes in the construction industry and responds quickly to them has been the red thread of the educational institution's operations ever since and will certainly continue to be so from now on," says the chairman of the board of RATEKO, director of development at NCC Pekka Kiuru.
