Sustainable construction forum: young discussion in the midst of uncertainty

The second Sustainable Building Forum organized by RT brought together more than 250 construction industry experts around the theme of biodiversity.

The forum talks emphasized how the work done for biodiversity in the construction industry is colored by uncertainty about the future. Uncertainty is related to the direction of regulation, procurement criteria as well as diversity measures. Many sectors, such as the circular economy and compensations, still lack functioning markets.

Uncertainty is also created by the lack of talent, which makes it difficult to reach diversity goals both nationally and at the European level.

The forum also revealed that the discussion on biodiversity is still young. Experts may use different terms for the same thing.

The Sustainable Construction Forum reminded that the construction industry has a significant potential to influence biodiversity. In the midst of all the uncertainty, it is therefore important that companies do not wait. Ways to safeguard diversity should be developed and shared now.

The current topic attracted and hooked me

The sustainable construction forum was organized on 28.10. on Friday for the second time. RT's member companies were the most widely represented at the forum. There were also representatives of other organizations and, for example, educational institutions. The monitoring data of the event shows that the participants also kept up with the threads closely.

The forum was opened by the director of RT's sustainable construction program Miimu Airaksinen from SRV.

The state of preparation of the national biodiversity strategy was presented by a special expert Joona Lehtomäki from the Ministry of the Environment. Airaksinen commented on the presentation from the perspective of the construction industry.

The situation of the overall reform of the Nature Conservation Act and the development of ecological compensation was analyzed by the legislative advisor of the Ministry of the Environment Pasi Kallio. Kallio's presentation was commented on and at the same time Rudus's diversity work was opened by Rudus' environmental manager Terhi Rauhamäki.

Finally, the manager Juha Laurila and environmental director Pekka Vuorinen RT promised that the biodiversity road map for the construction industry will be completed by the summer of 2023.
