Extra points for the Master of the Year for coordination, throwing and interaction skills

Ilari Havia has been chosen as the "2020 Champion of the Year" of the Southwest Finland district of the building construction industry. In addition to the fact that he is an iron professional in his role as the responsible foreman of YIT Suomi Oy, he has received special praise for, among other things, his communication skills.

"Ilar's work shows the desire to do things right. It is easy for him to stand with his back straight and satisfied with the end result. He is a well-liked, listening, conversational and consistent supervisor," says the work manager, who is proud of his colleague Mika Mäntymäki from YIT.

In choosing the Master of the Year, Havia's skillful creativity between different parties, respecting and treating them equally, was highlighted in addition to high-quality professional expertise. The matter was noted especially at the construction site of Sokos Hotelli Kupitta, which was a special target in many ways even for the responsible foreman. It is located right next to the Kupittaa train station, so several stages of the construction had to be completed at night, when the electrification of the track could be cut off. Consequently, the construction work was only successful with seamless communication between VR, Väylävirasto and various subcontractors. The operation of the neighboring NEO hospital, other office buildings and train traffic also brought their own spice to the builders' everyday life.

The goal of the hotel's future user, Turku Osuuskaupa, was to create a spectacular, high-quality and customer-attracting entity. Fulfilling this wish also required special coordination and dedication from the responsible foreman. In a subsequent customer satisfaction survey, Havia received praise for her interaction skills, which is a valuable characteristic in modern construction.

Ilari Havia graduated as a civil engineer from Turku University of Applied Sciences in 2011. He has been with YIT since 2008, first as a foreman, then as a site engineer, and in recent years as a responsible foreman. In addition to the hotel site in Kupitta, he has worked in several apartment building sites and most recently in the NREP/FDS logistics center built near Turku Airport.

Master of the Year awards have been awarded since 1982. The annual reward is based on significant construction-related merits. The effort is to emphasize the importance of the work management of building construction sites.
