Hanna-Kaisa Vesa, recipient of the INFRA Northern encouragement award: "I followed in my little sister's footsteps into the infra sector"

The 37-year-old Hanna-Kaisa Vesa, who received an incentive award for good school performance, graduated from the Oulu University of Applied Sciences with a major in civil engineering, majoring in community engineering.

"I already have the papers of a software engineering engineer, but it didn't feel like my job. My little sister graduated in 2016 from community engineering and attracted me to education. I was already excited when I was at school, that now I have found my own thing, and I have not regretted the change of field", Hanna-Kaisa Vesa says.

Hanna-Kaisa currently works at Keski-Suomen Betonirakenne Oy. He develops an operating system related to quality, environmental issues and safety.

Digitization is entering the infrastructure sector, and Vesa's educational background has been useful in the new position.

"In the future, more and more digitization will be used in the workplace, and it will make it much easier to manage quality and take care of environmental issues and safety," he sums up.

A positive attitude leads to better work results

Hanna-Kaisa Vesa wants to raise the bar on quality and responsibility in the infrastructure sector.

"I encourage all actors to be transparent in their work, to have an honest attitude and to be responsible. Hiding defects must be removed from quality matters, and the general attitude should be rewarding. To improve quality, you need more of a carrot than a stick," a newcomer to the industry uploads.

"If something goes wrong and we're in trouble, we shouldn't try to hide the problem areas. In quality control, mistakes are also valuable. You can learn from mistakes and do development work based on them."

Hanna-Kaisan calls for a new kind of attitude to the traditional industry in every way.

"Work done with a positive attitude can be seen behind the work. There is no need to be afraid of mistakes and sanctions or that the supervisor will come to see. Add a positive spirit to the industry!"

The newly graduated engineer is clearly enthusiastic about his work and talks about the enthusiasm for development he got from his training.

"I am in the fortunate position that my current employer has accepted my development idea very positively and seriously. I have also received praise for my work."

More women in the infrastructure sector, please!

"It's great that for once a woman came to talk," commented excavator driver Hanna-Kaisa at the site of the ELY center last summer.

Women are very welcome on the construction site and work goes well in a male-dominated field.

"Working with men is easy and clear. However, not all speeches should be taken so seriously."
