Park deck Bryga in Helsinki's Kalasatama has been chosen as the Environmental Structure of the Year 2019. The park open to the public, located on the roof of the shopping center REDI and in connection with the tower block complex under construction, is a new, future-looking urban construction in Finnish conditions. The spacious area has plenty of activities suitable for different ages. You can come to the park, which is open during the day, to breathe and feel the presence of the sea.
The results of the competition organized by Betoniteollisuus ry, KIVI ry and Puatarhaliitto ry were announced on February 20 at the Green Days organized in Jyväskylä. Certificates of honor were awarded in the competition to the person who ordered the awarded object and to the entities most involved in the planning and implementation.
Certificates of honor were awarded to: SRV Rakennus Oy, Landscape architecture office Maanlumo Oy, Arkkitehtoimisto Helin & Co Oy, Lighting Design Collective Oy, Sweco Rakennetekniikka Oy, Sitowise Oy, Puutarhapalvelu Hannonen Oy, Terrawise Oy.
A variety of functions
According to the competition jury, Bryga is forward-looking deck construction that brings new ideas to dense urban construction. A high-quality, unique outdoor space open to the public enriches the local urban environment, inspires a new urban culture and promotes urban ecology.
Bryga is a park open during the day, where you can come to breathe and feel the presence of the sea. The park can be accessed from the REDI Shopping Center by elevator and from the outside via the curved stairs from Anglaisauuki. There is a pedestrian and cycling connection from Itäväylä.
Conditions have been created for Bryga for a wide range of activities. At the east end of the park, there is an event square structured with stones and an asphalt mound. Technology integrated into pergolas and wooden platforms enables the organization of small-scale events. In the center of the park is a sand artificial turf field bordered by plantings and wooden platforms. On the other hand, you can climb, swing and balance on the playground. The smallest have their own fenced play area. There are also plenty of places to relax, from sun loungers to the view terrace at the west end.
Maritimeness can be seen in the structuring of the outdoor spaces and in the choice of materials and plants
Bryga is part of a series of central outdoor spaces in Kalasatama designed by Maanlumo Oy, which reflects the area's past as an archipelago and an industrial port environment. The spatial structuring of the outdoor spaces and the design of access routes, materials and vegetation are based on the archipelago theme.
Water routes, i.e. walkways, have been planned for the park and yard decks, which meander between the terrain mounds that emphasize the direction of movement. The lounge and play areas are located in the recesses of the mounds of vegetation. The stone surfaces of the sitting areas resemble coastal cliffs, the safety platform surfaces of the playgrounds resemble shallow coastal meadows. Along the main route, there are coastal grasses and flood paths marked by rocks.
More than 50 plant species have been planted on the park deck. They are seashore and archipelago species that can withstand the demanding growing conditions of the place.
High steel pergolas serve as support structures for vine plantings and provide visibility and wind protection. In addition to the basic lighting, the pergolas are connected to art lighting that changes according to the wind. The calm movement of light imitates the rhythm of water.
Stormwater is utilized
A stormwater collection cell has been installed over the entire deck area. The water is delayed, humidity conditions are equalized and stormwater is used for the vegetation of the area. Terrain mounds with plantings also delay stormwater. The main route is bordered by a cast bed that collects surface water, rhythmized by natural stones, where the water lingers after the rain.
About 35% of Bryga's surface area is vegetation and an additional 18% is other water-permeable surface. Planted areas increase the diversity of urban nature, improve low-climate conditions and acoustics, protect from wind and reduce stormwater load in the sewer network, and bind air pollutants.
Recognition for a high-quality environment
The goal of the Environmental Structure of the Year competition is to make known high-quality environmental entities, where good planning and implementation have created an aesthetically and functionally sustainable, good environment. Bryga's design has required long-term and close cooperation between different design fields, the developer and different parties of the city. The prize was awarded for the 29th time.
The jury of the competition was represented by Betoniteollisuus ry, KIVI ry, Puutarhaliiito, Viherirättisliitto, Finnish Landscape Architects' Association, Finnish Architects' Association, the Ministry of the Environment and the press.
