Ideas for repairing suburban houses
26 proposals were submitted to the competition. In its evaluation, the award committee paid particular attention to the architectural quality of the proposals and the whole created by the buildings and the courtyard.
The functional functionality of the solutions as well as structural and energy technical solutions were also evaluated. The award committee considered the general level of the proposals to be good. In the best proposals, the new architecture of the facades and the improvement of energy efficiency, the addition of elevators, the construction of additional floors, the enlivening of the courtyards, and the building technical and construction theory issues were all successfully solved.
The design competition for the renovation of an apartment building is a traditional idea competition for renovation construction funded by Julkisivuyhdistys ry for students of the architecture schools of Aalto University, University of Tampere and University of Oulu.
The purpose of the annual competition is to produce high-quality, versatile and feasible ideas for energy repairs of the facades of suburban apartment buildings built in the 1960s and 1980s, as well as for the construction of elevators and additional floors.
The competition was organized for the first time in 2002. This competition was the 12th time in a row.
The award committee of the competition stated the following about the best works of the 2019 competition:
1st prize "KUMU"
"KUMU" is a work that combines the old and the new with merit in its architecture, which forms a complete and visually pleasing whole. The facades are of high quality and their beautiful colors and details are elegant. The general impression of the work is calm and harmonious. The floor plans of the new apartments are functional. The versatile communal spaces on the above-ground basement floor increase the sense of community and form a functional connection to the surrounding courtyard. The treatment of the courtyard area is successful and the courtyard buildings in particular create comfortable limited spaces and look well in harmony with the additional floors. Structural engineering solutions are functional and justified. The light repair solution for facades is particularly successful and feasible.
2nd prize "SUSHI"
"SUSHI" is an original proposal, where the slanted support columns of the balconies make the facade playful and lively. The additional floor is successfully connected to the existing building with the help of a uniform material palette. The solution also respects the old building. The new balconies lighten the appearance of the building and the size of the building, which has been raised by only one floor, remains restrained. The yard area and the block form a beautiful and complete whole, where each function is clearly in its own area. A separate yard sauna increases the ways of using the yard. The parking deck serves the needs of the entire block well. Structurally, the proposal is functional and justified. The structural details are impeccable and they are presented clearly.
3rd prize "PIKI"
"PIKI" is a well-thought-out and unified whole, where the proposal that completely renews the exterior of the building is an urban vision for the additional construction of a small apartment building. The massing of the building is rhythmic, controlled and expressive. The dark wooden surface creates a harmonious and uniform appearance, which helps the building blend into the surrounding forest. The floor plans of new and existing apartments are functional. The sauna, club room and roof terrace are attractive. The stairwell and elevator have been solved efficiently. The barbecue canopies and cultivation plots in the yard increase the possibilities for using the yard and for socializing. Parking is clearly demarcated and interesting yard areas are created around it. The technical solutions are functional and implementable. The structural details are of excellent quality.
Honorable Mention "ON THE EDGE OF THE FOREST"
"METSÄ REUNASSA" is architecturally a sculptural and uncluttered proposal, whose effortless and restrained appearance combines old and new into a harmonious whole. The wavy wooden curtain wall is a beautiful and unique solution for aesthetically tying new stairwells and balconies to the building. The apartments on the above-ground basement floor are of a suitable size and have a pleasant connection to the yard. The yard area forms a well-planned whole, to which communal elements, such as terraces and cultivation areas, have also been creditably added. Clearly delimiting the driveway and parking to the edge of the street allows for the formation of a large, unified yard area. Solar panels improve the energy efficiency of the proposal.
