Ideas for repairing suburban houses

16 proposals were submitted to the competition. In its assessment, the award committee paid particular attention to the architectural quality of the proposals and the consideration of the cultural-historical values of the building and its surroundings. The structural and energy engineering and functional functionality of the solutions were also evaluated. As a whole, the fact that the presented plan is suitable for the building that is the subject of the competition took shape as an important judging criterion.

The award committee considered the level of the proposals to be variable. In the best proposals, more meritorious efforts were made to strengthen and enliven the old building's valuable features.

The design competition for the renovation of an apartment building is a traditional renovation construction idea competition funded by Julkisivuyhdistys ry for students from the architecture schools of Aalto University, Tampere University of Technology (TTY) and University of Oulu. The purpose of the annual competition is to produce high-quality, versatile and feasible ideas for energy repairs of the facades of suburban apartment buildings built in the 1960s and 1980s, as well as for the construction of elevators and additional floors. It was organized for the first time in 2002.

The 2018 competition period was 22.10 October to 31.12 December. The award recipients were announced on January 29.1.2019, 2019 at the Repair Construction XNUMX event at the Helsinki Fair Center.

The award committee of the competition stated the following about the best works of the 2018 competition:

1st prize Direction 225°

"Suunta 225°" is a successful update of the old building, whose sculptural shape increases the comfort of the entire area. Its architecture is designed precisely from the starting points of the target building. Excellent repair solutions make it a very viable proposition.

It has a peaceful atmosphere and the strengths of the proposal are sculptural massing, pleasant color choices and excellent repair solutions.

The material and color scheme of the proposal respects the appearance of the old building. The understated, but sculptural massing of the raised part is perfectly suited to the character of the area.

Two alternative repair methods increase the value of the plan. The possibility to carry out additional construction in parts also increases the realism of the proposal.

3rd prize Glass argot om

"Glass nårote om" is an architecturally elegant and basic solution strong and clever competition proposal. The proposal as a whole is linear and meritorious, and its composition respects the old building. In the proposal, the old building and the elevated part are combined with each other in an elegant and massing-successful way.

The new balustrades on the balconies echo the themes of the existing building, and increasing the size of the old balconies increases their value to the residents.

The new coloring of the additional floor and stairwells is in accordance with the construction period of the target building, but the ceramic material reveals it as a modern addition.

3rd prize Jyrkänne:

"Jyrkänne" cleverly updates the old building with a modern design language. The development of housing design and further research into energy technical solutions would benefit an otherwise excellent proposal.

The proposal is sculptural thanks to its accent piece, where the old building smoothly combines with the dynamic contemporary architecture.

The look of the existing building has been preserved and the building stands out with merit. The old facade world continues smoothly on the north side as part of the elevated part.

3rd prize Tuulenkärki:

"Tuulenkärki" is a well-planned proposal, where excellent apartment foundations and structural engineering solutions make it a smart plan.

The proposal is controlled and realistic. The massing of the elevated part of the proposal and the composition of the facades are commendable. Retraction of the additional floor and slanted ceilings make massaging elegant.

The housing plans of the proposal have been prepared carefully and are feasible. In particular, the enlarged balconies of old apartments increase living comfort. The common spaces on the basement floor are also well designed. The immediate vicinity of the entrances is cleverly designed.
