Finland's built environment test bed and pioneer

The key organizations of the built environment have joined forces and founded an association that creates a path for operators in the real estate and construction industry towards global markets and brings the best practices to the Finnish field of operation.

The focus of KIRA-InnoHub ry's activities is to create a vibrant ecosystem of the built environment that utilizes digital opportunities, which connects private and public actors from other fields in addition to real estate and construction. At the same time, Finnish know-how can be promoted and Finland can be made an interesting test laboratory for new experiments utilizing digitization. Hubi is also part of an international network of hubs, which enables companies to expand operations to new markets and learn about the latest innovations around the world.

The impetus for the newly established association has been given by the KIRA-digi flagship project promoting the digitization of the real estate and construction industry, which has provided a growth platform for 139 pilot projects.

"The real estate and construction industry is going through a time of great cultural change, and we have become the world leader in utilizing digitalization, for example in information modeling. However, the Finnish market is small, and therefore it is necessary to jointly promote international relations and clear the way for Finnish companies to go out into the world. Along with the pursuit of global markets, we want to promote experiments, scaling and the flow of information, as well as bring together communities and people who want to develop", opens RAKLI's CEO and chairman of the association's board, Jyrki Laurikainen.

The association is backed by the Association of Architects ATL ry, the Real Estate Tyengantajat ry, the Rakennusteollisuus RT ry, the Building Information Foundation RTS, the RAKLI ry, the Building Masters and Engineers AMK RKL ry, the Finnish Landlords Association ry, the Finnish Real Estate Association ry, the Finnish Association of Engineers RIL ry, the planning and consulting companies SKOL ry and Electrical and telecommunication contractors association STUL ry. The large background group shows that KIRA-InnoHub's operation has the support of the entire industry behind it.

Industry pioneer Teemu Lehtinen was elected CEO

The association is piloted by Teemu Lehtinen, a digital pioneer in the field, who currently works in the flagship project KIRA-digi.

"In KIRA-dig, a tremendous amount of new things have been achieved and positive enthusiasm for developing open built environment practices and digital solutions. In many cases, however, we have only scratched the surface and become aware of the enormous hidden potential. It is great that this work now continues seamlessly after the end of KIRA-digi, coordinated by the new association. I am very excited to participate in promoting the renewal of the built environment together with the state, municipalities and the private sector," says Lehtinen.
