VastMäkinen: A vocational education correction kit is needed

The last major reform of vocational training was carried out in 2018. Its effects are already visible, member companies report increased difficulties in finding competent new personnel. It is strange in a situation where basic degrees in the field are awarded more than twice as much per year compared to the need for a new workforce. The quantity seems to be sufficient, but the quality is not.

For this reason, last year we launched one aimed at educational institutions The LVI-Työelämäpartner network. There we have analyzed the reasons behind the situation. Somewhat surprisingly, one of the root causes seems to be a conflict between the national regulation and the mandatory regulation. Namely, the law requires you to act in a way that is opposite to the degree requirements prepared according to the wishes of working life.

In short, the law requires the organization of all screens at workplaces, but it is not possible to implement this at work sites, and there is no need for it. It is not a state of will, but a fact. The problem repeats itself because it has a direct impact on the quality of teaching. When pointing fingers, it's good to remember that educational institutions don't even have opportunities to implement degrees in a way that serves working life.

Since it is a problem that cannot be solved with a nice webinar or a new bulletin from the propaganda department, we took the initiative to change the law in such a way that it would also enable reasonable actions from the point of view of the employer and the individual citizen. This time, we also submitted concrete and well-reasoned proposals for changes that can be used to improve the degree's compatibility with working life.

During the current year, it will be exciting to watch how things progress. Are the decision makers interested in the customer orientation and effectiveness of the public service? Or is the reform made an independent value and more important than them? So now I'm not talking about taxis or social security areas, but about the payers of our future well-being.
