The best result in the Uusimaa occupational safety competition in the competition's history

The safety competition showed strong commitment and brought pleasant surprises. The cooperation worked and everyone took responsibility for the construction safety chain, including on the construction site, where the first place winners in the three competition series went.

In the 2025 Uusimaa District Occupational Safety Competition for the Building Construction Industry, the combined TR index of the companies rose to 94,4. This is the best result in the 29-year measurement history of the competition and a significant improvement from the previous year. The TR indices of the winning companies again approached 100.

SME sector and developers highlighted

Small and medium-sized companies were more visible in the top results of the competition than before. The competition has two construction site series, a series for large and small companies.

“The four best companies in the construction site series made a total of approximately 2,000 correct observations and less than 10 incorrect observations in TR measurements, which is an incredibly good ratio,” says the inspector. Manu Kivisaari From the Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Licensing and Supervision Agency.

Another thing that particularly pleased the inspector about the competition was the developers' active approach to safety.

"There were many good builders in the competition who showed genuine and continuous interest in occupational safety by actively participating in meetings and discussions," Kivisaari praises the builders.

Three first places for the same construction site

The Developers' Award was won by real estate investment company Exilion for its renovation project at Elielinaukio 5.

"The safety aspect is already taken into account at the tender and contract stage. Contractors must present to us safety management practices and metrics and the organization of safety matters in general," describes Exilion's property manager. Jussi Ojamo developer's practices.

"Safety must always come before other criteria. Only then do schedules, quality, costs and other factors come into play," he emphasizes.

Eliel's construction site won in no fewer than three competition series. At the other end of the construction chain is Laatta- ja kivikracken Suorsa, which won the award for best subcontracting company, which renovated the bathrooms in Eliel's project and did other tiling work. The work is done by its own employees, one factor behind the good result may be familiar employees who feel comfortable in the company.

"The oldest tiler will be celebrating 30 years in the company in the spring," CEO Juha Suorsa proudly tells about its employees.

The third victory from Eliel's construction site went to NCC in the large construction site category.

"Everything starts with advance planning. Occupational safety is discussed during the tender negotiation phase. Then, when we get to the shops, safety planning really gets started," says NCC's Mika Mensalo, who served as the foreman of Eliel's repair site.

End of the competition in dangera

Those who participated in the Uusimaa safety competition talk about the good competitive feeling and the positive effects that participating in the competition has brought. A good competition result is also noted on the construction site and crowned with a victory lunch.

The occupational safety competition is judged in conjunction with a normal regulatory inspection using TR measurements. The top-ranked companies hardly had any deficiencies that would have required further action.

"In the 2025 competition, occupational safety inspections were carried out on 132 construction sites. In total, employers were given approximately 50 warnings and 360 operating instructions. The warnings were mainly about the risk of falling and deficiencies in dust management, and the deficiencies in the operating instructions were evenly distributed across various safety issues," says Manu Kivisaari about the competition's judging.

The competition has been organized in the Uusimaa region since 1997. Next year the competition will celebrate its 30th anniversary, which could also be its last year of competition.

"There are dark clouds hanging over regional occupational safety competitions, as the Licensing and Supervision Authority has reoriented its operations regarding judging competitions. However, we will do everything we can to ensure that regional competitions continue. Since the late 1990s, they have been an excellent way to promote safety in the construction industry in cooperation with companies, authorities and other stakeholders," says the expert responsible for safety matters at the Construction Industry Association RT. Henri Litmanen.
