The competition between building construction sites for the safest construction site in the Satakunta region last year has been decided. In 2024, all building construction sites that AVI inspected during the calendar year participated in the competition.
The construction site of the Uotilanrinne multifunctional center of construction company Lapti Oy won the Satakunta region occupational safety competition organized in 2024 by the occupational safety responsibility area of the Building Construction Industry, the Construction Federation and the Regional State Administrative Agency.
Foreman responsible for the construction site Ville Riihiluoma considers occupational safety an important part of professionalism: "We invest in safety already when we map out the factors for the construction site. We have succeeded well in this and have assembled a team on our construction site that values occupational safety issues.
The general appearance and cleanliness of the construction site and addressing any shortcomings are also important. We have created a culture on the construction site where everyone cleans their own workstation and works in accordance with safety regulations. This also sends a message to new employees about how occupational safety is viewed and what is expected of them. Any shortcomings are addressed immediately and consistently.”
Riihiluoma would like to highlight the provision of a carrot: "Occupational safety issues are often only raised in connection with shortcomings. However, at Lapti, we also make positive safety observations and try to provide positive feedback through this. I also think that occupational safety competitions like this are a great way to strengthen the occupational safety culture on construction sites through positive means. It is a great thing that these are organized."
Lapti's Director of Occupational Safety and Quality Jukka Moilanen is pleased that with the project and the victory in the occupational safety competition, the Lapti way of building safely and with high quality will become even more familiar in the region. “Occupational safety is everyone’s business – it comes from working together. In Lapti, we have succeeded in creating a safety atmosphere where it is everyone’s right and duty to intervene in safety matters. It is great that we have been able to show our strong safety culture and our otherwise high-quality work at the Uotilanrinne construction site. Winning the competition is a great, concrete demonstration that our work is producing results. Thanks go to the entire personnel at the construction site,” says Moilanen.
The Uotilanrinne multifunctional center, which is being built in Rauma, combines a kindergarten, a school, a sports facility and a self-service library under one roof. The complex will be implemented in accordance with the four-star environmental classification of Rakennustieto. For example, the building will focus on the extensive use of wood in various frame structures and renewable energy sources such as geothermal heat and solar power. The Uotilanrinne multifunctional center will be completed in late 2025 and will be put into use in early 2026.
In 2025, occupational safety will be competed in a national competition, in which registered companies and construction sites will participate. The result of the regional competition will be decided at the same time.
