Ranta-Tampella's public outdoor spaces from Tampere have been selected as the Environmental Structure of the Year 2021. The whole consists of several different spaces that combine into a smooth and versatile series of outdoor spaces. The principle of planning and structuring the area is the overlapping of the built urban environment and the natural environment.

The results of the competition organized by Betoniteollisuus ry, KIVI ry and Puutarhaliitto ry were announced on February 8. Certificates of honor were awarded in the competition to the customer of the awarded object and to the entities that were involved in the design and implementation.
Certificates of honor were awarded to: Landscape architect office Maanlumo Oy, Insinööritoimisto Pontek Oy, Ylitys Oy and the City of Tampere/Five-star city center development program.
Expressiveness, versatility and innovations
Ranta-Tampella is Tampere's new residential development on a beach area built on filled land. The green construction of a large area of about eleven hectares has been done in the initial phase of the area construction, which gives the new residents a comfortable and functional environment right away. Skillfully executed channel structures expressively bring water into the area.
Ranta‐Tampella is an exceptional site that represents high-class Finnish environmental construction at its best. The planning of the project has been ambitious and the implementation is of high quality. The project has used new research data and made innovative solutions to meet the goals of environmental construction to build a carbon-neutral, resource-wise and diverse city. Unique and high-quality structures have been implemented in square and waterfront construction, which give character to the entire area.
The most central parts of the outer areas are Kiiskisaarienpuisto, which follows the shore of Näsijärvi and structures it, and the new canal with its shores. On the side of Lake Näsijärvi, the shore construction is natural, on the side of the canal the shoreline is urban. The beach area and the canal are connected by pocket parks of residential blocks. In the western corner of Ranta‐Tampella, right next to Tammerkoski, is the Nyrkkäkallio area, which has been preserved as original and natural as possible. Moving from the side of the rapids to the east, the treatment of the outdoor areas gradually becomes more and more urban. The most built-up part of Ranta‐Tampella is Gustaf Aspi Square, located at the end of the canal.
Water has been brought into the area
Natural stone, concrete stone and cast concrete surfaces have been used as materials for Ranta‐Tampella's outdoor spaces in a versatile manner and suited to the location. The use of wood in the piers and furniture brings warmth to the look of the area. The circular economy has been taken into account in natural stones, beach embankments and various structures, for example by utilizing blasted stone from the surrounding area and recycled street edge and wall stones, e.g. Hämeenti's old stones.
The bridges and the canal look seamlessly connected to the landscape architecture of the area. The visible surfaces of the canal's shore walls are made of large cast concrete elements, the reliefs of which have been inspired by the movement of water. Sculpted concrete overhangs form sitting platforms above the water.
Vegetation utilizes stormwater
Stormwater management is planned as part of the area's park and square complexes. Surface water is diverted to absorption pressures and vegetation use. Biochar has been used in the growing platforms and water collection cells have been used in the park areas built on top of the decks to equalize the humidity conditions.
The vegetation is designed taking into account the challenging conditions of the beaches. The shapes of the vegetated areas emphasize the dynamic, undulating design language of the parks and squares. The vegetation of the beach park is inspired by nature and the atmosphere of natural beaches, in pocket parks the vegetation creates a pleasant scale and protection for the vacation of the residential blocks. In the squares and on the banks of the canal, the vegetation has an architectural character. Birches, tar alders and rowan trees create the atmosphere of the beach zone, and the tree species of the urban park and square axes are various maples. Multispecies meadows and perennial and hay plantings increase the diversity of urban nature.
Recognition for a high-quality environment
The goal of the Environmental Structure of the Year competition is to make known high-quality environmental entities, where good planning and implementation have created an aesthetically and functionally sustainable, good environment. The prize was awarded for the 31st time.
The jury of the competition was represented by representatives of Betoniteollisuus ry, KIVI ry, Puutarhaliiito, Viherirvättiliitto, Finnish Landscape Architects' Association, Landscape Architects' Association, Finnish Architects' Association and the Ministry of the Environment.
In addition to Ranta-Tampella, among the six finalists of the 2021 environmental design competition were Myyrmäki sports park from Vantaa, Snellmanninpuisto and street areas from Kuopio, Tripla's outdoor spaces from Helsinki, Woodcity's rooftop garden from Helsinki and Vuosaarenhuippu from Helsinki.
