Rakennusteollisuus RT has drawn up ethical principles as guidelines for fair and just operations. The purpose is to encourage all member companies and industry operators, including subscribers, to commit to openness, transparency and responsibility.
The ethical principles were formed at the initiative of RT's board and have been approved at the association's autumn meeting. The instructions aim to increase understanding, will and ability to act in accordance with the requirements.
"Construction, planning and public procurement, for example, are still risk sectors in terms of corruption due to the large financial interests associated with them. We want to set an example with our own operations and strengthen an ethical operating culture", chairman of the board of Rakennusteollisuus RT Harri Kailasalo says.
Several companies in the construction industry have their own, very detailed ethical guidelines and regular personnel training practices to reinforce the correct operating methods. RT, on the other hand, makes the common principles of the industry known through member communication, training and good and, on the other hand, warning examples.
It is in everyone's interest to respect others and requires sincere and professional behavior from partners as well. Violations and deviations from operational compliance can cause considerable reputational harm and financial damage to companies.
In connection with the ethical guidelines, RT's website has a so-called complaints page, i.e. a contact page, in case of possible suspicions of abuse and contract violations, on which the competent authorities and courts in various matters are listed with their contact information. Abuses must be addressed by notifying the parties involved and, if necessary, by reporting to the authorities.
The starting point of RT's guidelines have been the ethical rules of the civil engineering industry drawn up by its industry association, INFRA ry, over a year ago. The instructions have been refined and supplemented to serve the entire industry. Next year, the plan is to renew RT's internal contracting principles, which will guide to functional and healthy partnerships.
