The best sites of the Safe Infrastructure Site 2013 competition, organized by INFRA ry, were announced on April 8.4.2014, XNUMX during INFRA's Safety Afternoon.
For INFRA ry, 2013 was the theme year of safety. During the theme year, we wanted to draw attention to the development of occupational safety in the infrastructure sector, reward safe construction sites and spread the use of the MVR meter to more and more companies and construction sites.
A key part of the safety campaign was the Safe Workplace 2013 competition. The campaign and competition were part of the Zero accidents in the construction industry 2020 project.
In the competition, inspectors from regional administrative agencies were responsible for measuring the safety level using the MVR measurement developed for the infrastructure sector. At the same time, the measurements were part of normal inspection activities. In addition to the MVR measurement, the employees' personal identifiers and tax numbers were checked at the work sites.
In the MVR measurement, the measurer goes around the construction site and notes down the Right and Wrong findings regarding work safety. The MVR level is a relative number: Correct observations are compared to all observations and the result is a percentage figure. For example, an MVR level of 95% means that 95% of the measured things are OK.
Results
The competition had two series: above-ground construction and underground construction. In addition, honorable mentions were given to sites that did not reach the awards, but whose MVR measurement result was 95% or more.
The ground construction category was won by Skanska Infra Oy's construction site Valtatie 8 between Kotiranta and Stormossen (Sepänkylä bypass). The second place was shared by YIT Rakennus Oy's Tarastejärvi waste incineration plant's ground construction site in Tampere and Lemminkäinen Infra Oy's Kivisydän parking garage above ground work in Oulu.
Underground construction The safest site in the series was Lemminkäinen Infra Oy's Kivisydä rock park in Oulu. SRV Rakennus Oy's Länsimetro construction site, additional excavation of Keilaniemi station, came second. Lemminkäinen Infra Oy's Koivu-Mankkaantie Sports Park site in Espoo took third place.
Honorable mention was given to the following sites (all above-ground sites):
• Oitta outdoor recreation area, Espoo (EMPekkinen Oy)
• Friisinkalliontie, Espoo (Skanska Infra Oy)
• Honkasuo regional construction site, Helsinki (City of Helsinki's construction service Stara)
• Keilaniementie, Espoo (Skanska Infra)
• Stabilization of Leppävaara's local sports center + water supply (EMPekkinen Oy)
• Ruoholahti bridge, Helsinki (Lemminkäinen Infra Oy)
Roses and twigs
The safety level has increased year by year at infrastructure sites. Based on the results of the competition, the risk factors leading to the worst accidents have been comprehensively removed.
The use of protective equipment is already exemplary. The employees' identification cards were properly visible at the campaign sites.
The biggest shortcomings are still related to the use of eye protection. There is also plenty of room for improvement in trench safety. Slipped and stepped trenches are still carried out too much based on experience. The lessons of the Vaara vaanii kaivannonna guide published a year ago should be used by several construction sites.
