Getting to know working life TET

We have put together our own instructions for companies, suitable for the construction industry, on how to organize an introduction to working life (TET) period and what participation in it gives the company.

Introduction to working life periods are organized in the middle schools of all basic schools, usually in the 8th and 9th grades. The episodes are focused on autumn and are 1–2 weeks long. The young person is insured on behalf of the school for the period, and he is not paid for the period. The goal is to support young people in matters related to career choice and further education.

TETtiläinen brings new opportunities to the company. It is important for the entire construction industry to be involved in TET activities. Many other fields are competing for the young talents of the future.

What can TET bring to your company?

To ensure versatile competence, the construction industry must know how to tell young future workers about the versatility of the industry and increase transparency. TET episodes are a great tool for this. With their help, young people, both boys and girls, can be inspired to apply in the field. TET sessions are organized for all middle schoolers all over Finland, so the target group is the entire age group.

The image of the construction industry and the company where the young person completes his familiarization period is not limited only to the young person who has attended the TET course, but is carried along with him to his family and friends. Pupils' stories from TET periods can and should be shared in different media. In addition to the fact that communicating about young people creates a positive company image, an active and open discussion about TET episodes keeps the issue alive.

The TET student who comes to your company for the familiarization period is a young assistant interested in the field, for whom the period is often the first contact with working life. During the course, young people learn a lot of the basics of working life, and many TET students have applied to the same company after the course get to know the and Earn program. Perhaps one of your TET trainees is even the future manager of your company!

The renewed TET course is easy to implement

The period of familiarization with working life is traditionally seen as a young person's first employment relationship. Since the young person has no work experience and, for example, an occupational safety card, he is often assigned the simplest tasks. However, it doesn't have to be this way, and thinking like this often leads to a very one-sided acquaintance period in terms of content and boring from the young person's point of view.

The TET course based on a new approach is safe, easy to organize and attracts different people to the field. Young people get the most out of the episode when they get to know different jobs by watching the work of experienced workers. Merely mapping, sweeping or making coffee does not give a true picture of working life and different career options in any field. There aren't any competitive upperclassmen and first-graders yet, but there are eager apprentices and apprentices!

What all can be included in the TET period?

  • safety observation and participation in TR measurements
  • all kinds of assistant work while traveling with the director
  • surveying the company's various job descriptions, for example using a ready-made interview template (the goal is to get to know the entire company's operations)
  • drawing up your own regional plan on a blank map
  • examining the company's website: Is it easy to find information on the website? What kind of images are created based on the pages?
  • producing material such as photos and videos for social media channels
  • You can find more ideas in the sample order of the TET episode. The reading sequence is divided into three-hour parts, from which you can choose the most suitable ones and use them to support the ideation of the episode.
