The KIRA growth program aims for renewal and growth of the industry

The operators of the Real Estate and Construction Forum (KIRA Forum) have drawn up a joint value proposition and a KIRA growth program based on it. The aim is to speed up the goal-oriented development of the industry with green transition, production efficiency and value creation that permeates the life cycle. The program has been created as a road map for development and as a basis for all operators in the field.

The real estate and construction industry growth program was published on Tuesday, February 8. The common promise of the industry presented in the program is a functional, safe and sustainable built environment in 2030.

The promise is not small. Buildings, cities, roads and networks are the basis for the functioning of our society, where a significant part of our national wealth is committed. The built environment also plays a key role in mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity.

Climate change is not done by reducing construction, but by renewing the built environment faster and building with more efficient and sustainable methods than before. This is also necessary for the realization of the goals of the EU's Green deal program and the Fit for 55 plan for the green transition that promotes it.

The growth that renews the built environment and the industry requires companies to have new skills and greater development efforts and investments than at present. In the Kira sector, the chronic lack of public R&D funding has become a bottleneck.

The parliamentary tki working group recently finished its work. Hopefully, its unanimous and business-supported proposals for long-term financing and tax incentives will be realized and will be better targeted at the rental industry as well.

The growth program has identified 13 opportunities for the growth and internationalization of companies in the sector. The greatest growth potential is seen in sustainable buildings and infrastructure, flexible solutions, low-carbon building materials, energy-efficient solutions and optimization of energy use, and circular economy. Companies in the industry plan to invest in all of these in the future.

Identified growth opportunities create both an international level competitive advantage and solve key, known challenges in the industry.

Seizing opportunities means piloting, joint development and influencing market practices. The need for projects enabling renewal investments is emphasized. Cities play a significant role as clients of large projects. The demands of customers and financiers also serve as both drivers and enablers for operations in accordance with sustainable development and life cycle thinking. When making this new normal, enabling regulation and smooth official services are also emphasized.

In the preparation of the growth program, it was recognized that many opportunities need activation and ideation, as well as locomotives to move them towards practical implementation. Therefore, when starting the program, only a few, significant in terms of effectiveness and investment-ready growth opportunities are invested. The work continues, supported by the KIRA forum, with the determination of more precise progress and result indicators and with negotiations aimed at increasing R&D funding.

The themes of the program contain ingredients not only for environmentally sustainable growth, but also for improving customer satisfaction, quality, profitability and productivity. Users of the built environment and ultimately society as a whole benefit from innovations and services of greater added value.
