Member story: Responsibility for the country has taken RTA companies to the sources of information

RTA-Yhtiöt Oy, a 50-year-old family business from Hyvinkää, is a specialist in demanding special construction projects in the infrastructure sector. It has been a member of INFRA ry for almost 40 years. They know how to utilize member services.

RTA-Yhtiöt provides large-scale civil and environmental construction turnkey contracts and special works for industrial and infrastructure developers. The company has acted as a contractor for, among other things, the Hepokorpi substation in Espoo, the construction of the Tammisto substation in Vantaa and its expansion, and the new construction of the Närpes Vatten Ab waterworks.

CEO of RTA-Yhtiöt Nina Lindström has seen the full spectrum of the elected official career. “I have served on the boards of INFRA Uusimaa, INFRA ry and RT,” Lindström says.

Lindström was active on the RT board from 2017 to 2020, including two years as vice chair. Today, he participates in INFRA's sector working groups, but his participation has been sporadic since his active period.

"All the vacancies have had their place in the field of influence. Now I look at the activities through the glasses of a member of the council, and the perspective is quite different."

However, according to Lindström, advocacy is the most important member benefit at all levels of the federation.

“I really value advocacy work. Having been involved myself, I know how difficult and long-term it is. There are no quick wins in advocacy.”

Subscribers need information about responsibility – RT's metrics help

RTA companies struggle in their daily lives in the permit jungle. A lot of information is needed and obtained from the Employers' Association, especially on responsibility and environmental issues.

"In environmental permit issues, I have received expert assistance in making permit applications and interpreting permit decisions. INFRA and RT's service orientation is at an excellent level. You get answers immediately. If the answers require more in-depth research, you will be notified," Nina says with gratitude.

The company uses the software found on RT's member pages carbon footprint emission calculator, which was implemented as soon as it became available. In addition, accident frequency has been measured for years using the customer's tool.

“These are two significant sustainability metrics that our customers actively ask us about.”

Top-notch employment advice and the latest member news

The Construction Industry Association (RT) has solid legal expertise, and INFRA's lawyers are networked extensively within RT. This means that even the most difficult problems can be solved.

"When our own knowledge of employment matters is not enough, we turn to INFRA. Legal and employment advice works well and there is strength in the union community's networks," Nina Lindström praises.

There is also plenty of training available in the community: “We have taken advantage of both free member training and RATEKO training. RATEKO training is usually more affordable for RT member companies.”

INFRA and RT's member communications, in turn, provide useful information to member companies.

“Newsletters keep us up to date in an ever-changing operating environment. We especially follow changes in legislation,” says Nina.

"RT's communications have developed enormously in recent years. Comprehensive information can be found both on INFRA's member service OmaINFRA and on RT's member pages. Both are actively used in RTA Companies."

Do I get value for money?

Companies naturally carefully weigh which communities they want to commit to and what it is willing to pay. The same is true of RTA.

"As a long-term member of INFRA, we have regularly reviewed the relationship between membership fees and the benefits gained from membership, and there have been no problems with paying the membership fee, as long as you remember to utilize the membership service available from the union community," Nina Lindström sums up.

"It's largely up to you how much and which membership services you use. There are a lot of them available."
