The body of the Siilinlahti school is being completed

The competitive negotiation procedure of the Siilinjärvi life cycle schools lasted 1,5 years, and the plans for YIT's winning proposal were developed in cooperation for half a year. Versatile teaching facilities are built in the sites, the planning and decisions of which have also been made by the teachers at every stage. The project complex, which is in a heated phase, is one of the largest in Eastern Finland and currently employs more than 70 people directly on the construction sites. Including subcontractors and consultants, the employment impact is significant. "The strength of the working countries will continue to increase and locality has also been emphasized in procurement," says YIT's work manager Mika Kaskela.

Construction work on the life cycle schools in Siilinjärvi started in 2023 and the schools will be completed in stages between 2025 and 2027. The concrete frame of the Siilinlahti school will be completed in September, when the construction of a weather shelter to protect the frame will begin without delay. The structure of Ahmo's school center will be completed in several stages. "The economy has not helped with implementation, the Construction Cost Index has continued to rise," says YIT's Kaskela.

Siilinjärvi is a precise indoor air regulator. "All moisture-sensitive work steps are carried out under a weather protection with a separate frame," says the client's construction consultant Hannu-Pekka Seppälä from A-Insinöörei. "The goal is healthy and safe premises for the end user," says Siilinjärvi premises manager Jukka Kellokumpu.

The Kuivaketju 10 criteria is used in both schools, and an external consultant takes care of monitoring the implementation. RTS certification for level 4 stars is in use. The certificate requires e.g. calculation of the targets' carbon footprint. The recycling rate of life-cycle schools' waste - including abundant demolition waste - is over 90%.

"YIT is responsible for the energy efficiency of the site for 20 years. PTS and maintenance programs guide the planned maintenance of the premises. Here, too, the goal is to keep customers satisfied," promises YIT's regional manager and contract manager Mika Kukkonen.

A large sports hall is being completed at Ahmo's school, which will be Siilinjärvi's future event arena. The construction sites are progressing ahead of schedule, which has required precise and multi-phase scheduling. With weather protection, a winter with heavy snow makes a lot of work, but YIT is not afraid of the coming winter: "The weather is always the best possible", says Ville Ahokas, responsible foreman of YIT.

The different parties of the project have invested in cooperation, which is still done every day. Operating schools around the construction sites have familiarized the students with going around the construction sites. "Blowing into one coal has been at an excellent level. We operate among people and do everything we can to ensure safety," sums up Kaskela.

Siilinlahti school was extremely clean and safe despite the busy core phase. Moisture management was seen as an investment in rainwater management inside the frame. The playground full of children was right behind the fence of the construction site, and I bet an unobstructed view of the construction site dominated by the huge lattice boom crane that will raise the builders of the future.
